Garrett Hotels and the Garrett’s Desert Inn is proud to announce with great honor, the winner of the Innkeeper of the Year award, Robert Ruiz. This great honor is awarded by the New Mexico Lodging Association, and is recognized by for the entire State of New Mexico.
As General Manager, Robert has been with the Garrett’s Desert Inn for almost a decade. Since March of 2006, Robert has done a fantastic job at managing the property as well as taking on additional responsibilities for Garrett Hotels. In addition to his management responsibility with the Garrett’s Desert Inn, Robert has recently taken on the role as Asset Manager for Garrett Hotels and helps oversee the financial management of both the Garrett’s Desert Inn and the Don Fernando de Taos.
We congratulate, Robert on his continued success as one of New Mexico’s top Innkeepers and the Innkeeper of the year.
Behind Robert’s quiet, laid back demeanor, is a man of many strengths. He not only has become the master at forecasting and budgeting, but he is tenacious. He strives for perfection, especially from himself. Robert is very even keeled. He never raises his voice when he is upset. He has high expectations of his employees and develops strong business relationships from them. He notices the potential in others and acts accordingly. His management style gains respect and loyalty from almost everyone that works with him. So don’t let the quiet personality fool you, underneath is someone who is always thinking and notices everything…..
Robert has also spent time coaching his youngest son Niko’s basketball team, loves camping and fast cars. Outside of work, his life revolves around his family.
-Upon graduation from Santa Fe High School Robert attended NMSU in Las Cruces. Major: Bio-Chemistry. He had aspirations to be a dentist.
-During his senior year he obtained a summer job working the front desk at La Posada de Santa Fe. Mike Cerletti was the GM. Mike became Robert’s mentor. It is around this time that Robert decided he no longer wanted to be a dentist. (Besides, the thought of getting so up close and personal with strangers and their mouths no longer seemed appealing.)
-He graduated from NMSU with a BS in Bio-Chemistry
-Upon graduation from college Robert continued to work at Las Pasada de Santa Fe. While at LaPosada de Santa Fe (1982 – 1984) he acted as FOM, Night Audit …. (And YES, he did see the infamous ghost of Mrs. Stabbs!)
-In mid-1984 Robert relocated and worked as Rooms Division Manager for the La Posada de Albuquerque. There he stayed until August of 1989.
